    W543 19th .C.Netsuke,HOTEI
The Netsuke dates from the mid to late Meiji period; between 1860 and 1880. The Netsuke depicts a Buddha like figure, carved in ivory and wearing flowing robes.

The figure is bare-chested and he has large ears and balding head.
The well known friendly Hotei.
The figure holds or drags over his shoulder a sack. The sack is plain and almost pebble like, of smooth and polished ivory. The figure itself is decorated with black lines. There are one or two cracks to the ivory, these long filled with dirt; this being part of the process of the ivory drying out over time. There is wonderful detail underneath, to the feet. This beautiful figure has its two holes to the base and back. The figure measures a length of approximately 1.75 inches and it stands approximately 1.5 inches high. This is a delightful example of the Netsuke carvers' art.

The figure supports himself with one hand and in his left hand he holds a tablet / writing book. The head is beautifully polished with wear; the detail to the clothing being created with scratched and coloured markings. There is wonderful detail underneath, to the feet and clenched hand. This beautiful figure has its two holes to the base and back. The figure measures a length of approximately 1 inch and it stands approximately 1.5 inches high. Vishnoe, ook Narayana genoemd, is binnen de Hindoe-drieenheid het

is het aspect van God dat alle dingen in het universum doordringt en
onderhoudt. Het scheppende of creatieve deel van God wordt verbeeld door
